Bridge Opening FAQ’s
When will the bridge be open to the public?
THE BRIDGE IS NOW OPEN …..TO ALL USERS – seven days a week. Go and enjoy it. However, a few short-term closures will occur in the fall.
The Grand Opening Ceremony occurred at 11am on August 8. Both communities attended to celebrate the reconnection of this historical link between Portsmouth and Kittery. It included a procession across the bridge and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by former Portsmouth Mayor Eileen Foley, who was five years old when she cut the ribbon at the original Memorial Bridge opening on August 17, 1923. This was only 9 days short of a full 90 years. Priceless!
ATTENTION MARINERS: As of August 1st, the normal and historic lift schedule is in effect. If requested, the bridge center span will lift at the top of each hour and at the bottom of each hour. Yes, every 30 minutes, upon request.
Just like the old days!
The NHDOT, MaineDOT and Archer Western Contractors greatly appreciate the support of the U.S. Coast Guard and the patience of the mariners during the project.
The Veteran’s Day celebrations in Portsmouth and Kittery were well attended this year. A ceremony to rededicate the bridge as a memorial to the Soldiers and Sailors of World War I is still pending. We’ll update you when we can if plans are set in motion.
